Tikrit University Second Annual Women’s Convention

 

Tikrit University, in cooperation with Iraqi Al-Amal Association and sponsored by Prof. Dr. Maher Saleh Allawi; President of the University, held their second annual convention under on: “Women, makers of life” on 1st April 2012. 

The convention commenced by a speech by Dr. Maher Saleh Allawi, the President of the University, who expressed the support of the University to activities and the programmes which deal with Women’s Rights and strengthen women’s position inside the University and society. Then Ms. Hanaa Edwar, General Secretary of Iraqi Al-Amal Association, spoke aboutthe importance of joined action among CSOs and Universities in order to disseminate awareness, human rights and gender cultures.

Two subjects were presented at the convention. The first was on Domestic Violence by Ms. Naghem Kadhum Hamodi, Director of Iraqi Al-Amal Association’s office in Najaf. The second was on the Influence of Customs and Traditions on Violence against Women by Activist and Sociologist Ms. Elham Maki Hamadi.

An intense discussion took place among the attendants, concrete recommendations were submitted such as forming committees in hospitals and government institutions to monitor cases of violence against women without relying on reports by women to police stations, the necessity to specify a hotline to receive the complaints of women who are subjected to violence in each governorate, the importance of appointing sociologists at schools and colleges in all its levels, their duties to monitor the psychological and social status of the students specially those who are victims of domestic and gender violence. The convention stressed the importance of enacting a law on the protection from domestic violence.

A documentary film was shown at the convention titled “Silent Shahrazad” by the Iraqi Director Dr. Amenah Al-Dhehbi, and then Dr. Siham Al-Bassam showed a presentation on the history of women inTikrit University. It’s worth mentioning that the University is about to celebrate this April its silver jubilee of its foundation, and the first of its female graduates were from the Girls College.
