Al-Amal Board of Trusties Member Receives a Master Degree with Excellence

The Master Thesis of the media representative Mr. Emad Jassim – member of the board of trusties in Iraqi Al-Amal Association – was discussed on 14th November 2016 in college of Literature – Iraqi University by the discussion committee and received excellent degree after the discussions and the researcher’s defense of his thesis.

Thesis title was “The sub-identities in the Iraqi novel 2003-2014 represent Christian identity as a Model”. The thesis subject is concluded to that the human studies interest in the past years was clear in defining the concept of identity after so many political and security events that made the researchers and  writers to alarm the treats of the sub-identities extinction or about the crack inflicting the national identity. From this point the thesis transferred and analyzed the Iraqi novelists’ vision in their reading of the sub-identity and the national identity through pursuing the theatrical characters in those novels considering the thesis researches the Christian identity describing it as a sub-identity with existence in the Iraqi community which has religion diversity. And the social division and the conflict between the components after 2003 cannot be unnoticed after the American occupation of Iraq and what follows from chaos and threats spreading which affected minorities as a result to the weakness of the state and the emerging extremist religious groups that atone others that is religiously different.

Iraqi literature came up with the diversity of its arts to keep up with that conflict of identity and transfers fears and perceptions of the desire to embody reality or alert the Iraqis of the dangers of social division. Novel is probably the most expressive literary art of social and political experiences of groups. It is the subject that formed this thesis on sub-identity.

Matters for selecting the subject of this thesis:

1st: The researcher’s personal interest in the minorities’ subject and his continuing activity in media and civil society fields. On the other hand the identity subject affected the cohesion of the social fabric.

2nd: the novelty of the Christian identity found in literature in general and novels in particular in Iraq.

The research included a study of 17 Iraqi novels issued on the stated date in the thesis title and the timeline was set at the beginning of the American occupation of Iraq in 2003 since a new era has begun. Writers and novelists started investing the freedom atmosphere finally available after years of strict control authority where many subjects were denied addressing that are related to religion and politics some of them were the identity and minorities issues. The novels were chosen based on the conviction of the researcher that they meet the conditions of the research in addressing the Christian identity through their main and secondary characters and because of the fame and importance of their authors.

I wish this study is accepted and becomes a guidance for future students in the field of identity research in the Iraqi novel.

Iraqi Al-Amal Association congratulates Mr. Emad Jassim wishing him more superiority and glamour in his practical, persona; and academic life.
